Peridot
Peridot is one of only a few gems that only come in one color. For peridot that color is green. The green tones can range from yellow-ish to browni-ish tinted but will always be distinguishable as green. I love the most common colored ones; a light, bright green.
One of the things I love best about the peridot is to know where it comes from. They are made from minerals that are found in magma that comes to the surface of the earth from volcanoes. Among other places it is mined in Hawaii, Arizona, and New Mexico. Another source of peridots is meteorites.
The bright color of peridot is great for summer, which makes it fitting for August birthstone. It is also nice to wear because the color doesn't change when brought from sunlight to artificial light. The same pretty green will still show no matter the setting or situation. It can easily pair with other stones on a personalized necklace.
