A Just for Fun Mobile

I have seen baby ribbon mobiles a number of times in many different styles, and each time I just can't help wanting to make one. Having a HUGE stash of ribbon doesn't help either! But it's been hard to justify, my youngest boy is 8 months and probably too old for it.

But the other day as I thought about how I need to thin out the stash a little and I got to staring at this:
These little baskets I covered with a fun print (these were SO easy to make BTW). And I thought, why can't I just have a mobile for fun? Why not? And so I finally did it!

I took more pictures but they got erased. But the steps are EASY.

1.) Get some thick wire, you can use a wire coat hanger if you'd like. Then form it into a size ring you'd like.

2.) Begin to wrap it with ribbon, so none of the wire is showing. Tie off the end. Don't worry about loose ends, it'll look perfect by the time your done.

3.) Take pieces of ribbon of whatever length you'd like and begin tying! I used pieces roughly between 12" and 18"

4.) Keep tying! It will take a lot of tying!5.) When you're done take a piece of ribbon and tie it on the ring from one end to anther. Then do the opposite side, like and X. And then I crossed it again

6.) gather the center of the intersecting ribbons and tie one more piece of ribbon so you can hang it!

Easy! I've seen other versions using an embroidery hoop instead of wire and I've seen the ribbons glued which will give it a different look.

I love my new mobile!

  1. Made two of these mobiles for my daughter-in-law's baby shower using two embroidery hoops and 22 ribbon grab-bags from a favorite craft website of mine, each sold for $1.00 apiece, and had 10 pieces of yard-long ribbon. I also added some yard-long lace pieces to make it more "girly". They look great--thanks for the idea! (I can tell you the name of the site, if you want---don't know if I'm allowed!)
