Birthstone of the Month - September

One of the things I have learned since making jewelry is all about birthstones and could probably recite each month and stone in my sleep. I can't help it, I love gemstones. They are just so sparkly! I work with numerous suppliers from around the world to get some of my favorite stones to work with and have grown to love each one.

While I receive the stones cut, polished and ready to make jewelry with, it is amazing to think that each stone came from our beautiful earth. It is amazing.

September - Blue Sapphire

So September birthstone is a blue sapphire. Sapphires come in all sorts of colors (I love the pink ones!) but by far the most popular and most widely known is the blue sapphire.

Since sapphire gemstones can be a little more on the rare and spendy side there are a number of other stones people use to represent their birthstone month. Also each of these other stones have a slightly different look so it really depends on what you like.

Iolite - Water Sapphire

Iolite is usually much more affordable than a sapphire but it also has a translucency and earthy quality that you can't find in some sapphire gemstones. It has a much lighter look to it.

 Lapis Lazuli

Another popular alternative to a blue sapphire is lapis lazuli. The first time I saw the stone was in a piece of jewelry my husband got me from Chile. Lapis lazuli is a lot like a sapphire with some differences. Often times it is a much brighter blue and has specks of gold, which I love. I have a number of pieces with these stones because I have grown quite fond of them lately.

Lastly......
London Blue Topaz

Ok, I am pretty sure this stone is not on any official list or anything but I have always loved to use it for my September birthday friends. I remember the first time I saw one I was at one of my first gem shows (where you can meet with suppliers and purchase stones, it's amazing, at least for me). I saw them and had to buy some. Little did I know they can actually be quite spendy, but for being that gorgous I had to give it a go.

London blue topaz stones a darker than their brothers the blue topaz which is December's birthstone. And like blue sapphires you might find at a traditional jewelry store, they are extremely translucent and sparkly. I'm sure sparkly isn't a word a real jeweler would use but I do all the time. So there. I love stones that sparkle.

As you can tell I am very drawn to the dark blues. They are extremely versatile and I always seem to find myself wearing them because they do go with just about anything.

Happy September!
