Cleaning and Taking Care of Sterling Silver Jewelry

Silver is a very fine metal that can damage easily but if used as sterling silver, which is made up of about 93% silver, mixed with 7% of another metal, it is much stronger and holds up better over time. That's why sterling silver is used commonly in jewelry.

Even though it sterling silver holds up well it is still important to take care of it. Some of the easiest ways are to simply take it off before you are cleaning, showering, swimming, or sleeping. If it starts to dull you can wash it with a phosphate-free detergent in warm water. Don't dry it with a paper towel, but use a cloth instead.

If your sterling silver tarnishes you can use silver cleaning products that you would get at the store but only use them on silver, silver polish can sometimes harm stones or gems that are also part of the jewelry.

Lastly I have used this little, simple and safe trick more than once when I was in a pinch. All you need is some baking soda, aluminum foil and boiling water. I was doubtful when I first tried it but it actually does a pretty decent job! Here's a full tutorial.
