Taking Care of Gold Jewelry

Gold jewelry is sturdy and durable, which means it can last a long time and can end up as heirlooms. My wedding ring is a gold band that was my husband's grandmother's ring so if I want it to last beyond me I need to be a little more careful with it.

First things first, take off your gold jewelry when cleaning or swimming. Chlorine can weaken or discolor gold over time so make to keep them out of the pool.

When your gold is dirty there are a few ways to clean it, you might need to be aware of the stones in it when picking which way to go about cleaning your gold.

Soap and Warm Water
On of the most straightforward way to clean your jewelry is with a few drops of liquid dish soap in a dish of warm water soak your gold for about 15 minutes. Then cleaning it with a soft towel should clear it all up. Rise with water and then dry on cloth.

If your jewelry has stones in it and you are worried about soaking in water or getting the stones too wet you can easily use the same soap solution on a soft towel and scrub at the gold. When trying to keep stones dry it's best to hang your jewelry to dry so the water drips off rather than absorbs into the cracks around the stones, which might loosen it.

Toothpaste
Toothpaste is a mild abrasive and can bring a lot of shine back to gold jewelry. You can apply toothpaste with a soft bristled toothbrush or a soft cloth. If using a toothbrush use as soft bristled as you can find. Don't forget to rinse and dry it when you are done.

Be aware of the clasps and prongs on your gold jewelry. A friend of mine lost the stone out of her wedding ring because a prong came loose. If anything seems loose make sure to have it repaired before wearing it extensively.
