Monsters Cake

One of my daughter's favorite Disney movies is Monsters Inc. When I asked her what kind of cake she wanted for her birthday she said Monsters. I thought she would say animal or something, last year she had a bunny cake which was nice and easy, but with a vague idea in my head I could do and Mike and Sulley cake. It didn't turn out exactly how I envisioned it but it was cute and everyone, including my daughter loved it.

I was going to do a tutorial for how I made it but it's simple enough it doesn't need a full one. I will let you know what I did and a few tips in case you want to make a Monsters Inc cake.

My idea was the bottom layer to look like Sulley's fur and the top layer to be Mike. We did both Mike and Sulley the same cake flavor but you wouldn't need to.

I made Sulley's cakes in 8 inch cake pans, only because that's what I have. If you have 9 inch I would use those so that his is a little bigger around.

I used this buttercream frosting recipe. I made one and a half of the recipe. I layered the two Sulley layers with frosting in between and then started with the blue frosting. I don't have a trick to get the right color, I just added blue food dye to the frosting until it looked the color I wanted.

With a knife I frosted the blue, leaving big holes unfrosted. I didn't have a pattern, I tried to make it random. When done with the blue I added some red to the frosting so I would have purple for Sulley's spots. Then using a small knife I filled in the holes with purple.

Mike I made two layers tall, while I was making it I wished I had only done one but it worked out. I used 8 inch cake pans for the Mike cake as well. After I turned it out onto a plate I used a small bowl as a guide and cut a smaller circle out of the middle.

I frosted around the edges with green before placing the first Mike layer on top of Sulley. Then I cut the other layer for Mike and put it on top. Before frosting the rest of Mike I refrigerated the cake for a little while so that the parts already frosted would stay while I frosted the rest.

I did the green around Mike and then chilled it again.

Then I made a white circle on Mike for his eye. Inside that I used a little blue for a smaller circle. Both of those I spread with spoons but I used a decorating tip to do the black for the eye and the smile.
